Post Sandy, Long Islanders are still in need

To the Editor:

My family and I would like to extend our sincerest thanks to the entire community for their overwhelming support, and to those who helped my mother return home after Sandy (“Muzzy” Healy comes home,” Sept. 15-21).

We are very grateful for the assistance of so many good people to get my mother home. I’d like to give special thanks to her contractor, John Baron, of Baron II Contracting; Scott Primiano of Insurance Advocates; local grassroots groups including the11518 and Adopt A House; her neighbors; Christina Lipski of Touro Disaster Center; Anne DeMichael from Nassau County and Sen. Todd Kaminsky.

Kaminsky has continued to fight for his constituents who are still struggling to recover from Sandy.  We are lucky to have had a number of “angels” while dealing with the ravages of Sandy and the red tape bureaucracy of FEMA and New York Rising.

There are others on Long Island still suffering who need people in their corner. While we celebrate for my mother, we know others are still struggling to get home. Unfortunately, the help they all need is not easy to find.

We want to thank the Herald for keeping this story in the forefront so that folks who may not have been directly impacted by Sandy will know that their neighbors may still be struggling and trying to get home. Maybe more politicians will see that after almost four years, many Long Island home owners are in desperate need of champions like those I’ve mentioned.

Angels among us

To the Editor:

About a week ago my son, Greg, left his wallet at the gas station on Hendrickson Avenue by Cross Island Fruits in Lynbrook. By the time I got back there, it was gone — and the station manager laughed in my face at the thought of anyone turning it in.

When I got home, there was the wallet, in my mailbox. I don’t know if I’ll ever know who did that, but I send them my prayers and many thank- yous, over and over.

My son happens to be the type of person who also would have returned a lost wallet, and to have it done back to him shows him that there are angels among us.
