Community input is welcomed

The following letter was addressed to Lynbrook residents and shared with the Herald by the Board of Education.

The Lynbrook School District Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Melissa Burak would like to thank the parents, community residents and students that attended the April 19 Board of Education meeting for expressing their thoughts and insights regarding the defeated bond. We greatly appreciate your opinions and share your concerns about the importance of ensuring that our facilities support a 21st century curriculum, and that we remain a source of community pride.

In the months ahead, community input will continue to play a valuable role as the board and administration discuss cost-effective facilities options, and address the concerns that were raised so we can devise a plan for consideration of a possible future bond referendum. There will be multiple opportunities for the community to be part of this input, and we look forward to your participation. We all agree that important decisions must be made regarding the future of our district, and we look forward to doing that together.

The Lynbrook Board  of Education and Melissa Burak, Superintendent of Schools

We’re taxed to the gills

To the Editor:

Kudos to Kelley Stewart for once again so eloquently voicing the opinion of the silent majority in Lynbrook (“School board like a ‘petulant child,’” April 14-20).

The residents of Lynbrook were inundated with fliers and mailings in the weeks leading up to the bond vote. I, too, was shocked that it didn’t pass, but it was a pleasant surprise!

The burden on the taxpayers’ backs is incredible. It’s completely ridiculous that the school board is asking for this kind of spending. I wholeheartedly agree that those who want it need to get on top of fundraising efforts, and while they’re at it, demand that your school board do a better job with the money they already have. The taxpayers are taxed to the gills and should not be asked to foot this bill. It is about our pocketbooks.

Mary Chin, Lynbrook
