Listen to the inspector

I’ve often thought of writing a book titled, “You Gotta See This!” about all the pictures and stories I’ve accumulated from construction errors, assumptions and their outcomes. I guess that because I’ve been writing this column for so long, and people like letting me know, I’ve seen hundreds of disasters. As I wrote in a previous column, seeing all these problems has helped make me a better professional. I know I sometimes sound cynical, but seeing the same mistakes committed over and over will do that. I appreciate young, confident builders, but have come to appreciate the older voices of knowledge who took me under their wing. The first thing they taught me was to listen. On job sites, once in a while, the tools powered down and the lecture began. I miss that. It’s your turn to listen to the inspector and observe. Good luck!
