Mill Road ‘Crawl of Shame’ rally fizzles

At 7:30 a.m. on Oct. 21, seven cars put their hazard lights on, and filed out of the Peninsula Shopping Center on Mill Road in Hewlett and drove to Valley Stream at about 15 mph.
The protest came about through a Facebook page — Nassau County Protests the School Zone Camera Speed Safety Program. It was held to send the message to Nassau County that residents do not like the speed cameras being set up in school zones. This protest was one of two in the county on Tuesday,. The other was in Plainview.
Spped camera opponents believe the camera program infringes upon their rights. According to the page, “Speed cameras penalize the registered owner of the vehicle, not necessarily the driver of the vehicle… The cameras are not about safety; they’re about generating revenue for the county.”
Hewlett resident Jana Brook, said she took part in the protest because she was outraged at having received a ticket and didn’t know she had gotten one, as she traveled through a school zone with a camera after what she thought school hours had ended.
“I’m just outraged at the audacity,” she said. “I think this is clearly a money-making operation. From 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. the cameras are running, and why? Those are longer than school hours. I heard a quote somewhere that said that this program is using children as human shields, and I agree. This program has nothing to do with safety.”
Future rallies have yet to be schedlued. For more information, visit https://www.facebook.com/groups/NOSPEEDCAMERAS/. For more about the speed camera program visit http://www.nassaucountyny.gov/agencies/tpva/speed.html.
