Nassau County police issued an advisory on Thursday warning the public of a suspicious man reported to have approached girls in Valley Stream, Lynbrook and Lakeview.

The incident in Valley Stream occurred on Tuesday, May 5 at 7:45 a.m. near the intersection of Grove Street and Jamaica Avenue. Four other incidents — three in Lakeview and one in Lynbrook — were reported between April 13 and May 7.

The subject is described as a black male between 20 and 30 years old, driving a black van or SUV that might have a dent on the right rear door and might have tinted windows.

In three of the incidents, the children were walking to or from school. All have been female and range in age from 8 to 16 years old. Police said that in two cases, the man attempted to entice the children by offering candy.

Police encouraged residents to call 911 immediately if they observe activity as described, and offered the following suggestions: If a stranger stops their car and asks the child questions, run the opposite direction and tell authorities; always walk in groups and stay close to the curb, away from shrubbery and doorways; and do not take shortcuts through alleys, vacant lots or parks.
