Sandlot Baseball League kicks off season

Posted

The stands at Firemen’s Field were packed last Saturday for the Valley Stream Sandlot Baseball League’s opening day ceremonies, beginning the spring season that will last through mid-June, culminating in a league tournament.

Bobby Inzerillo is president of the league, formerly known as the Valley Stream Baseball League. He said the name change came with a reorganization of the league, and said there would be a bit of a shift in focus.

“We are gonna be a league that tries to really build its travel teams,” he said.

The opening day ceremonies included a singing of the National Anthem by Tony Kateridge — “our very own Pavarotti,” Inzerillo said — and Mayor Ed Fare threw the first pitch to catcher Brian Hart.

The players and crowd gobbled down more than 600 hot dogs, Inzerillo said. More than 350 players from the league’s 26 teams attended, with each playing its first game of the season at the field.
