Congressman Gregory Meeks, of St. Albans, Queens, who currently represents the 6th Congressional District, becomes the incumbent for the re-numbered seat. He will be challenged by Republican Allan Jennings, a former New York City councilman. It is the first time, at least in recent memory, that a Congressional district has spanned both Nassau and Queens.

At the state level, Senate boundaries have shifted a little bit, but Nassau County’s five districts remain largely unchanged. Locally, Republicans Kemp Hannon, Jack Martins, Charles Fuschillo and Majority Leader Dean Skelos are all up for re-election.

The 8th Senate District features the third matchup between Fuschillo and Democrat Carol Gordon, who also ran for the seat in 2008 and 2010.

There are big changes to state Assembly districts, including the creation of a new district in southwest Nassau. The 22nd District, which spans from Bellerose to North Woodmere, has no incumbent.

Sean Wright, a North Valley Stream resident and a deputy attorney for the Town of Hempstead, is the Republican nominee for the seat. Michaelle Solages won a three-way primary to emerge as the Democratic candidate. The Elmont resident is the sister of first-term county Legislator Carrié Solages.

The district currently represented by first-term Assemblyman Edward Ra, of the Franklin Square, changes drastically. Not only does the number change from the 21st to the 19th, but communities such as Elmont and North Valley Stream come out as district shifts north and east into Brookville.

Ra will face off against Gary Port, of West Hempstead, who last year ran for Town of Hempstead supervisor.

Other incumbents on the ballot this year include Republicans Michael Montesano, David McDonough, Thomas McKevitt and Brian Curran, and Democrats Earlene Hooper and Harvey Weisenberg.

John Brooks, as he did in 2010, faces off against McDonough in the 14th Assembly District.

Statewide, U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is up for re-election. She is seeking her first full six-year term after being appointed to the seat vacated by Hillary Clinton four years ago. Her opponents are Republican Wendy Long and Green Party candidate Colia Clark.
