V.S. Little League celebrates opening day

Players, families gear up for new season

Valley Stream Little League members enjoyed the sunny skies on April 11 for the organization’s opening day ceremonies to kick off its 57th season.

“You couldn’t have asked for a better day,” said Steve Baez, the group’s president.

Turnout was comparable to previous years, he said, and each team had members show up. There were games before and after the ceremonies in which all divisions participated.

At the ceremony, Baez’s son, Nicholas, 10, threw out the first pitch for the baseball clubs and 12-year-old Arianna Picillo threw one for the softball clubs.

Baez said the day is a chance for his organization to thank its local sponsors, some of whom showed up, but less than in other years, he said. Also on-hand were local dignitaries, including Mayor Ed Fare, several village trustees and Hempstead Councilman Anthony Santino.

Baez said he was encouraged for the upcoming season by the turnout at the VSLL’s winter clinics. He said a few changes would be implemented, including kids doing the pitching in the 7-8 age group. Baez said starting earlier would benefit players as they move up into older age groups.
