Lido Golf Club reopens under Town ownership

After an extensive rehabilitation process, Hempstead Town officials reopened Lido Golf Club on June 18.

The facility — which was previously owned by Double Eagle Golf — has undergone various upgrades, including re-paved golf cart paths, refurbished restrooms, new and restored weather shelters and new golf carts, town officials said.

The 7,000-yard course resides in Lido Beach between the Atlantic Ocean and Reynolds Channel and is open six days a week and closed on Wednesdays.

“We’re proud of our stunning seaside links golf course, and we are pleased to unveil a challenging golf facility that has been restored to top-notch condition,” Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony Santino said.

As part of an environmentally conscious effort, some of the cart paths were paved with recycled, tumbled glass. Additionally, a fully lit driving range will accommodate golfers for evening practices.

To promote the reopening, Santino offered a free round of golf on Father’s Day for Hempstead Town residents accompanied by a son or daughter.

The course — designed by Robert Trent Jones — features massive bunkers, water hazards and what town officials called “the toughest stretch of finishing holes on Long Island.”

The previous owner of the course ran the facility for 20 years before being evicted by the town at the end of its contract June 3, according to Newsday.

Double Eagle and the town have exchanged legal spars, including Double Eagle’s management suing the town for being owed $800,000 for Hurricane Sandy repairs, after the town waived leasing fees for the past four years instead of covering repairs, according to Newsday.

Golf club rates range from $20 for nine holes during early bird hours to $44 for 18 holes on weekends and holidays, although rates vary based on residency, time of day and day of the week. Discounts are available for veterans, volunteer firefighters, auxiliary police and EMT’s, seniors and individuals with disabilities.
