Oceanside’s elementary summer camps feed those in need with summer car washes

It’s the dog days of summer, where the sun shines bright and temperatures have routinely hit the 90s — perfect conditions for a car wash.

This summer, continuing a four-year tradition, elementary summer campers at Schools No. 2, 4 and 8 hosted car washes benefitting the Oceanside Community Service food pantry which helps food-insecure individuals and families across Oceanside. The washes are organized through Oceanside’s Department of Community Activities.

The campers ask residents to donate food, or if not possible, a monetary contribution in exchange for getting their cars cleaned by a team of expert, elementary school-aged car washers. The donations go directly to OCS.

“I think it’s a nice idea for the children to help their community in a small way,” Nancy Baxter, vice president of OCS said of the washes. “They’re having a great time, especially … when it’s really hot, they’re having a ball, and they’re helping their community.”
