Valley Stream children chalk it up to a good day

About 80 Valley Stream children and their parents gathered at the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library to cover the sidewalk in chalk drawings at the library’s annual Sidewalk Chalk Art Show on April 27.

As part of the annual spring event, each child had the opportunity to make a chalk drawing and earn a certificate of participation, and then tie-dye clothes that they brought. Library Director Mamie Eng said some of the children made very elaborate pictures, and others have never had an opportunity to tie-dye clothes, as their parents were reluctant to let them tie-dye at their house because of the mess typically associated with clothing dyes.

Eng said the parents appreciated that their children were spending time outside on an almost 60-degree weather day. “It was a very family-friendly activity,” she said, adding that she hopes more children participate in the show next year.
