Valley Stream man arrested for menacing a police officer

A Valley Stream man was arrested on Jan. 8 after he lunged at a police officer with a knife, Nassau County police report.

According to police, patrol officers responded to a call about a mentally unstable man at a Wheeler Avenue address. Upon arrival, an officer located the individual, who was armed with a kitchen knife that was approximately 4 inches long. The male suspect, whom the police did not name, then lunged at the officer with the knife and the officer tried to verbally engage the suspect to de-escalate the situation. The suspect then lunged at the officer a second time, and a struggle ensued. The suspect was subdued and placed under arrest.

The defendant is charged with menacing a police officer and attempted assault in the second degree. He will be arraigned when medically practical.
