Their day at the helm of Valley Stream

At the Public Works building across the street, Sanitation Supervisor Wayne Mastrangelo showed Marken and Kayla how the trucks are weighed. Through the window, they watched each truck drive onto the scale. Mastrangelo told them to look for the truck number so they could properly input the information into a computer.

As truck 66 drove off the scale, Marken waved out the window, and the sanitation workers waved back. He called over the radio, “OK, 66, you’re clear to dump,” meaning the truck could be emptied into the compactor. A few minutes later, Marken and Kayla headed to the sanitation yard and operated the controls on another truck to do just that.

After they took a ride on a garbage truck around the facility, it was time to say goodbye. “OK guys, go back to work,” Mayor Kayla ordered.

Parks and Recreation

The group got back into the car and headed to Hendrickson Park. “I always come here with my family to ride our bikes,” Kayla said. Entering from the walking track on the north end — a privilege reserved for village vehicles — they stopped to watch a tree-trimming crew. Highway Superintendent Tim Leahy and his crew were taking down a dead tree. Marken and Kayla watched as the tree fell and was then cut into two large pieces and loaded onto a village dump truck.

At the park, the mayors met a Public Safety officer. In the parking lot, they saw the brick work being completed around the new electronic community announcement sign. After that it was on to the skate park and then the dog park, where a crew was installing a fence.

Fare escorted his protégés into the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library, where they met with children’s librarian Jaclyn Kunz. She told them about the many programs the library offers — noting that the mayor attends many of them — and how to get a library card.

The group then walked back to Village Hall. Fare took Kayla and Marken through the building to visit the various departments, including the treasurer’s office and Code Enforcement. In the village clerk’s office, Marken noted Barra’s affinity for the Green Bay Packers.
