As summer draws to a close, the need for environmentally-minded residents of Wantagh, Seaford, and neighboring communities to step up and help make Jones Beach a little cleaner slows down as well, although not permanently.

With garbage bags and rakes in hand, 50 volunteers got down and dirty at the 10th annual Earth Day Cleanup on April 16. Hosted by the Levittown Community Council and Town of Hempstead, and walked the streets with a mission to clean up Levittown and the surrounding areas of North Wantagh.

More than 50 volunteers attended the cleanup.

Whether it was dropped by humans or brought there by natural forces, there was plenty of garbage to be found in the Tackapausha Preserve last Saturday morning. A group of volunteers spent hours cleaning up the park, which straddles the Seaford-Massapequa border.

Hofstra University has been awarded a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration grant of $75,000 to remove debris accumulated during Superstorm Sandy from a local salt marsh that is used regularly for research and educational projects. Among the professors spearheading the project is Dr. Russell Burke, of Bellmore.
