Seaford Historical Society sustains water damage

The plumbing pipes burst at the Seaford Historical Society’s museum in mid-February, causing damage to the structure.

The hot air burner could not keep pace with the historically low temperatures this winter, which caused the pipes to freeze and then burst, according to Charles Wroblewski of the society.

Consequently, the Historical Society, at 3890 Waverly Ave., had to cancel meetings scheduled for March 6 and April 3 due to the lack of heat.

Necessary repairs will require upgrades to the current heating system, including a new furnace, revamped ductwork and enhanced insulation. Any financial support to underwrite the work would be greatly appreciated, Wroblewski said. All donations are tax-deductible, and checks can be mailed to P.O. Box 1254, Seaford, N.Y. 11783. PayPal is available at http://seafordhistoricalsociety.org under the donation tab.

The organization’s next meeting is tentatively scheduled for May 1 when the newly overhauled Seaford Skiff, a boat built in Seaford in 1906, will be rededicated in memory of the late Bill Powell, a lifetime Seaford resident who helped lead the rebirth of the society over the last decade before his death in 2011. Board member Ben Sohm will speak about the history and refurbishment of the skiff.

The meeting is for members only, and annual elections will be conducted. Anyone who is interested in being a candidate for an officer’s position should contact current President Charles Wroblewski at 703-981-3525 or wrobocop@msn.com.
