Jared Wolfe knows how to win — on the field, in the classroom and in his community. Wolfe, a senior at MacArthur High School, was this year’s recipient of the Jay Fiedler Top Scholar-Athlete Award, which is awarded to one Nassau County football player each year.

Wolfe, 17, of Seaford, was presented with the award at the National Football Foundation’s Nassau County chapter dinner. The Jay Fiedler award, named for the former NFL quarterback from Oceanside, is the foundation’s most prominent award. As the recipient, Wolfe, who met Fielder at a football camp, also gets inducted into the NFF’s Hall of Fame.

“It’s huge,” Wolfe said of receiving the award. “There’s so many kids in this county who qualified for it. I’m so honored to be the person selected for it.”

He was nominated by his coach, Bob Fehrenbach, who said he was thrilled that Wolfe was chosen from among players at more than 50 Nassau County high schools. “He’s so deserving of the award,” Fehrenbach said. “He’s just a kid with a great character. Any positive traits that you can think of, this kid has.”

Wolfe, who is 6 feet 1 and weighs 190 pounds, was a three-year starter and two-year captain for the varsity football squad, which won the Nassau County Class AA championship over neighborhood rival Wantagh in 2015 before falling to Newfield in the Long Island finals. The wide receiver for the Generals saved some of his best work for last, scoring two touchdowns in the title game, and tallying 10 receptions for 141 yards.

“The championship run was unforgettable,” he said. “Although we lost that last game, we fought hard.” Wolfe added that the run brought the whole community together, with students, parents, teachers and alumni packing the stands for both games at Hofstra University.

Wolfe said it was the second game of his varsity career, when he was playing alongside sophomore quarterback Jimmy Kelleher, that stands out for him. It was when he scored his first touchdown in what would become an overtime loss to Garden City. “It felt like a jumpstart to my career,” he said.
