The floor was shaking, the screams were deafening, and there was black and gold from wall to wall. In other words, it was a typical Sports Night at Wantagh High School.

The annual competition for girls was held for the 60th time last Friday night, and a few inches of snow proved to be no obstacle for the hundreds of people who came out to cheer on the Black and Gold teams.

The Gold team’s theme this year was “Goldies on the World Wide Web,” and their skit featured a tribute to popular social media and websites. The girls were led by captains Jordyn Klapper and Morgan Sullivan.

For the Black team, the theme was “Blackies Hit the Books,” and each class did a musical tribute to different pieces of literature. Leading the team were Kristen Calautti and Gina Ciappina.

This was the first year that boys participated, with one on each team. Additionally, Kevin Pugh and John Casella served as the evening’s hosts. Fran Browne and Diane Sales were the faculty advisers.

Sports Night featured various dance routines and shows, in addition to competitive events such as relay races, a tug-of-war and cage ball. Points were also awarded for team spirit, banners and a volleyball game two days earlier.

As the points were tabulated, the girls gathered at center court, hugging their teammates and opponents, and dancing to songs such as “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” When the results were announced, the Black team emerged victorious, with Athletic Director Jen Keane presenting the trophy to the captains.
