Daisies bloom in Girl Scout Association

Posted

More than 30 girls attended a registration event hosted by the Girl Scouts of Nassau County on May 5 at the Seaford Middle School. While parents sat at the front of the cafeteria to learn about the program, the new Daisy scouts participated in fun activities at the back of the room.

“Here at the middle school, we have over 30 potential Daisy Scouts that will come in and meet the older girls, who do this as a service,” said Mary Vandenheuvel, chief association volunteer for the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “The seniors that are active in this organization give up their time and plan booths so each girl can experience a craft, a song or a story that has to do with our Girl Scout history and laws.”

Registration was open to all girls entering kindergarten in both Seaford and Wantagh for the 2016-17 school year. Girls that will be attending Seaford Harbor, Manor and St. William the Abbott elementary schools or Wantagh, Mandalay and Forest Lake elementary schools are eligible to take part in the Seaford-Wantagh Girl Scout Association.

“It’s a place where they can learn lessons and make friends for a lifetime,” Vandenheuvel added. “We are hoping a lot of the moms here will sign up to be leaders because without them, we are nothing and without their help, we can’t go on.”

MVP Specialist Rama Vora also attended the registration to help parents understand the responsibilities and effort that goes into the program and how to earn various patches. After breaking the parents up by school, Vora and other past Scout leaders answered any questions.

“We like to let these leaders know that they are not here alone,” she said. “They have a lot of support from our service team. All in all, it’s just a wonderful experience and at the Daisy level, it’s a family experience.”
