From books to bowling balls

Posted

After two months of keeping their minds sharp, children who participated in the Wantagh Public Library’s summer reading program were rewarded with a free evening of bowling at AMF Wantagh Lanes last Friday night.

About 100 children attended the party, which included bowling and pizza. The event was so popular last year, that library staff decided to continue it as the culmination of the reading program. This year’s theme was “Every Hero Has a Story.”

Children’s librarian Susan Finck dubbed the program a “huge success” as 516 children signed up for it, along with an increase in participation among teens.

Popular books this summer included selections from the Disney-themed “The Descendants” series and anything by author Rick Riordan. Salvatore Ansalvi, 6, said the best book he read this summer was “Fly Guy” by Tedd Arnold.

Some well-attended programs this summer were a science workshop put on by the Whaling Museum and Petra Puppets.

Numerous raffle baskets were given out as prizes last week. Several were donated by community organizations, while others were stuffed with goodies brought in by the Very Important Volunteers — local teenagers who helped out with the summer reading program.
