Racing season has begun. Cub Scout Pack 96 of Wantagh and Pack 239 of Seaford each hosted their annual Pinewood Derby last Friday.

Pack 96’s event was held at the Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church. There were 25 participants in the second- through fifth-grade division, and five racers in the first-grade division. Each car ran six races and the cars with the shortest combined times won.

Josh Berlin in fourth grade took home the first place prize followed by Anthony Marullo in third grade and Lucas Immel in fourth grade. The first-grade winner with the best time was Matthew Como.

Additionally, the fastest cars of each age group will represent Pack 96 at the district championships in a few weeks.

Pack 239’s races were held at the Seaford Manor School with two dozen Scouts taking part. The first-place winner was James Price, second place was Anthony Flores and Luke Donovan finished third.

For the Pinewood Derby, Scouts are given kits with a block of wood and four wheels. The boys customize their cars, which cannot be more than seven inches long or weigh more than five ounces.
