MacArthur runs table in April

MacArthur’s softball team has been nearly perfect in 2015.

The Lady Generals (13-1) entered the final three games of the regular season atop the Conference AA-1 standings and in prime position to earn a first-round playoff bye. MacArthur went unbeaten in the month of April with 12 wins in a row following an 11-3 loss to Massapequa in its second game on March 31.

“We’re hitting well and getting good pitching and defense,” coach Bob Fehrenbach said. “A new kid every day is doing something to help us win.”

The Lady Generals are aiming for their first county title since 2012.

MacArthur’s solid pitching has included a successful adjustment to the high school level from freshman Jessica Budrewicz, who won nine of 10 decisions in April. Budrewicz tossed a two-hitter with 16 strikeouts in an 8-1 victory at Calhoun on April 14.

“She’s got a lot of movement on her pitches,” Fehrenbach said of Budrewicz, who shined on the Salk Middle School team last year. “She’s very composed for a freshman.”

Senior Nicollete Moustouka has also excelled in the circle with a 3-1 record to go along with being among the team’s top offensive player as a leadoff hitter. “She is setting the table for us,” Fehrenbach said. “She is a line drive-hitter.”

Senior right fielder Sarah Dumont has also impressed Fehrenbach as the number three hitter. She delivered the go-ahead RBI with a sacrifice fly in MacArthur’s 8-6 home win against Oceanside on April 29. “She works out a lot and when she hits the ball, she hits a lot of line drives,” Fehrenbach said of Dumont.

The Lady Generals’ strong hitting and speed has led to five home runs through 14 games, including two from junior Gabby DeNunzio. Also rounding the bases in 2015 have been Shannon Myles, Jessica Lombardo and Moustouka. “These kids are really ripping the ball,” Fehrenbach said. “It’s going our way now.”
