Sandy-damaged homes up for auction

Posted

Six homes in Wantagh and Seaford damaged by Hurricane Sandy three years ago will be up for auction next month. All of the homes are south of Merrick Road — four in Seaford and two in Wantagh.

The auction is being organized by Paramount Realty USA in connection with Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Office of Storm Recovery and the New York Rising Housing Recovery Program. In total, 155 homes on Long Island damaged by the storm are up for auction on Nov. 17, including 81 in Nassau County.

Before the storm, some of the homes were worth as much as $875,000. Minimum bids for the houses can be as low as $43,000. This is the second round of houses being auctioned off by Paramount, based in Garden City. The properties are part of the inventory of vacant homes purchased by the Housing Trust Fund Corporation.

Homes on Somerset Drive, Jackson Avenue and Ocean Avenue in Seaford are waterfront properties, and the minimum bid is a 63 percent discount off each home’s value. The other three properties, on Cedar Street in Seaford and two on Wantagh Avenue in Wantagh, are being offered at a price of up to 75 percent below value.

The auction will be held at the Hyatt Regency in Hauppauge beginning at 9 a.m. Open houses for five of the six homes in Wantagh and Seaford will be held on Oct. 19. Conditions of the houses vary, and anyone attending is asked to bring a flashlight.

All redevelopment of the properties must be consistent with local use and zoning regulations and must be completed — with a final Certificate of Occupancy from the local building department — three years of the date of the closing. In the case that these conditions are not met, the property will revert back to the Housing Trust Fund Corporation.
