Satisfy your sweet tooth this Easter

Posted

Looking for a unique and tasty treat to add to your Easter table? Two local bakeries are making a variety of aromatic treats — breads, cookies, cakes and novelty baked items — that will make this year’s Easter dinner memorable.

Everything is made from scratch at the Princess Bakery in Seaford. Owners Anna and Alejandro Vasquez make a variety of Easter pies and specialty cakes and cupcakes for the holiday, as well as fresh breads.

“No one makes Italian pastries like this,” said John Canale, a long-time customer. “I’m a big fan of their chocolate biscotti. And, they make the best cannolis — always fresh.”

“Red velvet cupcakes are my favorite,” added Kathy, a customer from Wantagh, who frequents the bakery several mornings a week to buy fresh Italian bread and rainbow cookies.

For Easter, the Princess Bakery decorates its cupcakes and cakes to reflect the holiday season. Cakes and cookies are shaped like Easter eggs in a variety of pastel colors. There are marzipan chicks and cupcakes that resemble miniature Easter baskets.

The Princess Bakery, named after the owners’ three daughters — Elizabeth, Jennifer and Kimberly — began in Hicksville but moved to Seaford in 2002 where they have developed a loyal following. “They built this bakery with their two hearts and four hands,” said Flora Marroquin, a Princess Bakery employee. “Our customers can taste that love in our baked goods.”

Try the chocolate dip cheesecake, cut into thick slices, the sfogliatelle, a layered Italian pastry filled with sweet cream, or homemade ice cream cakes, all for Easter.

“Everything is delicious. You can’t go wrong,” Denise Williams said.

In Wantagh, Flour Girl, a specialty bakery, will have Easter baskets filled with baked treats — cookies, cupcakes and cake pops. You can buy these items separately and add them to your basket alongside the jelly beans and chocolate Easter bunnies, or call the Flour Girl and they will customize an Easter basket for you.

Owners Robin Gleiber and Lisa Papania opened their business on Wantagh Avenue the end of January. Robin, trained at the French Culinary Institute, and Lisa, at the Long Island Culinary Academy, both are pastry chefs with a passion for creating unique one-of-a-kind baked items for any special occasion or holiday.

“We are a specialty baker,” Gleiber explained. “We do novelty baked goods as well as shaped and sculpted cakes. Everything can be personalized.”

“If you can think it up, we can make it,” Papania added.

For Easter, try the bunny shaped cakes, cupcakes topped with little Peeps and cookies that resemble hand-painted eggs. Additionally, Flour Girl will have Easter-themed cake pops and push pops that include cake and cream.

The store will be open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. as well as from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Easter Sunday.
