Voters ready for Tuesday primary

Polling places all over New York will be buzzing with excitement for this year’s Primary Election. On Tuesday, April 19, many will be voting for who they think should ultimately run for president. Both the Democratic and Republican sides are stirring up controversy, and people everywhere are ready to cast their vote.

“I think this upcoming election is definitely different from any other we’ve seen in history,” said Michelle Figueroa, a Levittown native. “We saw the impact of the Internet and social media with Obama’s last two elections and I think with this election, even more so. This election has brought front and center many issues Americans have been dealing with for quite some time now.”

Two Democrats and three Republicans are still in the running for their respective party’s 2016 nomination — Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders on the Democratic side and Donald Trump, Ted Cruz and John Kasich on the Republican side.

“As someone who has been involved in politics, I think this upcoming election has not been taken seriously enough,” the 21-year-old Figueroa said. “Everyone seems to have an opinion on the candidates and everything that is wrong with the country, but very few seem to have all the facts. I think the fascination with this election has a lot to do with the fact, that as a nation, we love to be entertained, which is why our television channels are being taken over by reality shows. So when candidates begin to say whatever they want because they think they can, we sit and watch because it is entertaining.

“I believe the primary election will come down to Trump and Clinton,” Figueroa added. “However, with Sanders’ recent victories in the last several states, I still believe it’s anybody’s game for the Democratic seat.”

While New Yorkers are still trying to figure out which candidate is the best, all five have been vigorously speaking at various rallies throughout the state to give it one last go.
