Boosters raising money for athletic scholarships and more

With school back in session, students aren’t the only ones back into the swing of things. Parents, especially Freeport High School Boosters, are kicking of the new school year with a partnership with Jersey Mike’s off E. Merrick Road for a community fundraiser to help raise money for the club. This marks the second fundraiser supported by Jersey Mike’s this year. During the spring, the group raised $1665 of a single day’s sandwich sales. This school year, the Boosters has mobilized the entire school district by providing all of the students with 50 percent off sandwiches at Jersey Mike’s with a dollar of the sales supporting the club.

“My motto is children first,” Margret Meyvechi, president of the Boosters said. When you get involved and see every little thing you can do to help and the difference you can make— it’s about improving and helping the [school] community.”

With the monies raised, the Boosters can support all sixteen sports played at the high school. Through their efforts, the group is able to provide scholarships for athletes. During the 2016-17 school year, they awarded 26 athletes with a $250 scholarship for college. They hope this year they can award more. Though known to run the concession stand during the games, the Boosters’ volunteer efforts extend beyond selling chips and drinks and one of the oldest FHS organizations. Their object is to provide scholarships and continue to support coaches by covering equipment, uniform and any of the student’s needs.

Margret Meyvechi, president and Chatese Allen, co-secretary of the Boosters said volunteering as parents of athletes helps them make a direct impact not just to help their children, but also support all of the high school athletes. At FHS, there are approximately, 2000 students who participate in sports with some of those kids playing two to three sports in a single school year. Anything the club could do to make the season better, they say they’re willing to lend a hand.

“This year we want to do more for all of the sports teams,” Allen said. “Everyone is welcomed to join us. We have open meetings and are always making efforts to be known throughout the community.”
