RVC Homemakers donate socks to veterans

Members of the Rockville Centre Homemakers, a club of about 100 women from ages 40 to 90 who regularly meet to share and enjoy various skills and activities, recently donated 400 pairs of socks to local veterans.

The white socks were wrapped in red, white and blue ribbons and sent with a note thanking the veterans for their service as part of an annual tradition that has spanned about a decade, according to Karen Alterson, council co-president of the Homemakers.

“We just want to give back the only way we know how,” she said. “I know it’s such a small thing to us…a pair of socks. But just a little note attached saying, ‘Thank you for your service,’ and they don’t feel forgotten.”

The socks were given to Rockville Centre’s American Legion Post 303, which disseminates them to veterans at the Northport VA Medical Center, the A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility in Uniondale, and previously to troops overseas.

“They do a fantastic job,” said Frank Colon, Jr., commander of American Legion Post 303. “The ladies are very nice.” Some of the group members’ husbands are veterans, he added, and they are very appreciative of patriotic service. “It’s a win-win situation.”

The Homemakers, who just celebrated their 100th anniversary, are no strangers to community service, as they have supported Mercy Medical Center, South Nassau Communities Hospital and other local organizations over the years by making pillows for breast cancer patients, hats for premature babies, blankets for cancer patients and red scarves for heart patients.

The group meets every Tuesday at the Rockville Centre Recreation Center, and is looking for new members, 18 or older. Those interested can contact Alterson at (516) 318-6771.
