Take your parent to PE Week at the No. 2 School in Inwood

In an effort to promote physical activity and battle inactivity and the growing problem of childhood obesity, the Lawrence Primary School at the Number Two School is taking part in the second annual national Take Your Parent to PE Week from Sept. 24 to 28.

According to research by multiple organizations, 2 out of 3 children are not being physical enough. The idea as promulgated by Active School is a national movement to ensure that 60 minutes of physical activity a day is the norm in K-12 schools across the country. Lawrence Primary School houses kindergarten to second grade.

“The purpose is to introduce our school’s PE program and teachers to parents so they will engage with physical education throughout the year,” said Tara Nelson a physical education teacher at Lawrence Primary School, “ and, to encourage families to be physically active together at home and in the community. Parents will be invited to join their child’s PE class on a designated day and participate with their child in physical education activities.”

Active Schools works on two fronts. The group serves as a hub to help schools access best practices, programs, and resources to increase physical education and physical activity opportunities for students.

Simultaneously, it uses communication and activation strategies to engage champions, influencers, and decision-makers to help make systems and policy changes that will enable schools to educate the whole child — by reimagining school environments to provide opportunities for academic, social, emotional, and physical learning so that all children have the ability, confidence, and desire to lead active, healthy lives.

Research shows that active children perform better in school and physical activity helps them stay healthy and strong.

In addition physical movement can also contribute to higher test scores, improved attendance, better behavior in class, enhanced leadership skills and a lifetime of healthy habits.
