The Town of Hempstead has recognized a sanitation inspector and a field services crew who fund illegal drugs in an empty lot in Wantagh and alerted law enforcement authorities.

Hempstead Town Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney and Councilman Dennis Dunne were joined by Civil Service Employees Association Local 880 President Charles Sellitto in presenting the commendation on Oct. 2.

In honoring the seven crew members and their supervisor, the commendation cited them for their quick response, “which potentially kept these drugs out of the hands of children and helped keep the community safer.”

Dunne and King Sweeny have joined in a number of initiatives designed to reduce the prevalence of substance abuse in the community, including vaping.

“Keeping drugs out of the hands of children is essential,” Dunne said in a statement. “The actions of our town employees is completely in keeping with out efforts to protect our teens and adults, and they are to be commended for their response.”

“I am so proud of these employees and their quick actions,” King Sweeney added. “This is just one more example of everyone working together to help keep our communities safer.
