In August 2015, Matthew Goodison-Orr, a third-year Hofstra University law student, began working with Gary Port, a West Hempstead resident, attorney and U.S. Army veteran, on a pro bono legal case: A marine had suffered a brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder while on duty in Iraq, and never received treatment from the military after he requested it. He began to self-medicate with marijuana, and was kicked out of the Marine Corps after a urine test.

The incumbent state assemblyman in District 19 is Garden City South resident Ed Ra, who is seeking his fourth term. Challenging him is West Hempstead resident Gary Port, a divorce lawyer and military veteran.
The 19th District encompasses parts of District 18 includes parts of West Hempstead, Franklin Square, Garden City, East Garden City, Carle Place, Mineola, Garden City Park, New Hyde Park, Williston Park, Glen Oaks and Glen Head.

I am voting for Gary because as a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army, and a family man, he understands the words sacrifice, honor and loyalty. I am not asking for an elected leader to solve my problems, just one to be loyal to me, a resident of this town — not a political party boss.

To the excitement of hundreds of residents and local animal rights advocates who have been complaining for months that the Town of Hempstead’s Animal Shelter is in dire need of financial monitoring, State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli announced on Oct. 24 that his office will audit the financial operations of the facility. The audit — which DiNapoli said is in response to hundreds of complaints from residents and intends to ensure the shelter’s “integrity of financial accountability — will begin within the next two weeks.
