Former village resident dies at age 83

Gussie Lavelle, a former Malverne resident, died on Aug. 24 in Woodland Hills, Calif. She was 83.

She was the wife of Richard C. Lavelle, a retired lieutenant of the Malverne Police Department, for 62 years.

Lavelle will always be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and best friend. When she gave advice, she always told others to be happy and have fun. Family and friends say they were truly honored to have someone like her in their lives.

A memorial service for the former village resident was held on Aug. 29 at Lorenzen Mortuary in Reseda, Calif.

Lavelle is predeceased by her son, Robert, and survived by her husband, Richard, daughter Mary Ann Applegate, son Richard, son-in-law Michael Applegate, grandsons Matthew and Marc, granddaughter Angela, and a host of additional family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you send donations to Camp Hope in memory of Lavelle and her son Robert. The camp is a summer program for disabled children.
