Helen Duryea remembers

Posted

On the first cold Monday evening in March, the West Hempstead Historical Society presented its program “Helen Duryea Remembers…” to an enthusiastic and warm audience at the West Hempstead Public Library. The two-hour show was so well attended that seating had to be doubled at the very last minute to accommodate the 100 attendees. West Hempstead community residents poured over photos and articles from the archives. During the movie interview with Helen Duryea, constant whispering could be heard in the audience as people remembered together the history and landscape of our community. Special thanks go to Society President John Shaud, Archives Director Lesley McAvoy, Technology Director Chris McAvoy and our star and all around good sport Helen Duryea. Missed the show? The library’s Historical Society Display will feature boards from the show March through August and photos will be shown on facebook.com/westhempsteadhistoricalsociety. Plans are underway to show this unique look at West Hempstead at additional organizations and events. This summer, the Society plans to interview some older Lakeview residents for its next program, “A View of the Lake.”
