Beware of phone scammers

To the Editor:
A local firefighter received a call recently from a Long Island phone exchange. The male caller claimed he was from an organization representing New York state fire departments that collect donations to purchase fire and EMS equipment for local departments. A second firefighter received a call from apparently the same man, claiming he was raising funds for the fire department’s safety program.
This is a scam, and I want to warn all our residents. The Lynbrook Fire Department first mails its annual fundraising appeal in the spring, and then goes door to door in the fall to raise funds to help support the costs of the firehouses, which are owned by the volunteer firefighters — who must pay the bills to help protect their fellow residents. We never solicit donations over the phone.
Edward J. Hynes
Chief, Lynbrook Fire Department
