On Oct. 3, long-time friends Peggy Zieran and Carol Hoenig fulfilled a dream while introducing a clever and unique business concept. Housed in a century-old five-room home, Turn of the Corkscrew is a combination bookstore, wine bar and café, which also features workshops and a myriad of events.

Until its  closing, both ladies worked for Borders Bookstores. Hoenig was the national events specialist, working out of the Manhattan Park Avenue store, and Zieran was general manager at the Syosset location. Both had always dreamt of opening a bookstore, and independent shops seemed to be making a comeback. But, they knew they needed to change the traditional business model to survive.

With help from the Small Business Development Center at SUNY Farmingdale, they came up with a plan. Both lovers of wine, they decided to add that to the equation. After taking over the building that formerly housed My Angel, they obtained a tavern license to serve wine and beer. They added light fare and beverages so customers can sip, lunch, munch, read and/or browse.

The house is cozy and attractive. In the rear is the café, with a wine bar and stools. Another room houses children’s books. Up front is a fireplace, and there are sections for non-fiction, novels, books for young adults, and new releases. All books are new. For warmer weather, there’s a patio with tables. You can carry your wine glass into any room.

The basement is furnished with tables for workshops and events. Already planned are “Paint and Sip,” and meetings of book clubs and a sewing club. They will work with local artists and photographers, displaying art for them to sell. Feel free to reach out. On Nov. 28, Small Business Saturday, they featured novelist Alyson Richman.

In addition to books they also sell gifts, including bookmarks, journals, art prints, totes, tee-shirts, wine glasses, and greeting cards from small companies. Also for sale is retail coffee from Brooklyn Roasting Company, which they also serve in the café.

“Happier Hour” is Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.; wine and beer are half-priced, including craft beers and premium wine. Turn of the Corkscrew is open Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Check the website for events and happenings.
