Elmont School District students presented members of the Board of Education with beautifully decorated cards and tokens of appreciation at the Oct. 5 trustees meeting at Dutch Broadway School.

The celebration paid tribute to the board and commemorated New York State School Boards Association’s School Board Recognition Week, which runs from Oct. 24-28. School board members are recognized for their volunteer service to their schools and community. The festivities also included a rendition of “You Have Made a Difference,” sang by Dutch Broadway students, under the direction of music teacher Gary Citro.

In addition to the board recognition, 26 district students who achieved proficiency on the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT) were honored.

According to the NYSESLAT website, the exam is designed annually to assess the English proficiency of all English language learners enrolled in K-12 in New York State schools. The test gives the state and schools important information about the English language development of English language learners.
