Harsh weather doesn’t stop East Meadow on Night Out

Severe rain and thunderstorms tore through Nassau County on the evening of Aug. 7, putting a damper on many ceremonies in honor of National Night Out. But the East Meadow community refused to put an end to their 35th police awareness and safety event.

“If this is the first time in over 30 years that the rain poured on us, then we’re not going away,” said former Legislator Norma Gonsalves. She spoke to a dozen members of the community who huddled under the gazebo at Veteran’s Memorial Park on Prospect Avenue.

Among the crowd included Legislator Thomas McKevitt (R, D-13), Patrick Ryder, the commissioner of the Nassau County Police Department, Legislator John Ferretti (R, D-15), 17th District Assemblyman John Mikulin, Joe Parisi, the president of the Council of East Meadow Community Organizations, Helen Meittinis, of the Community Association of Stewart Avenue and Frank Camarano, the president of the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce.

Also on hand to answer questions were members of the Nassau County Police Department’s 1st and 3rd Precincts, Return Every Adult & Child Home program, Explorers program, Crime Victims Center, Amateur Observers’ Society, Meghan’s Law, and Nassau University Medical Center.

Before the ceremony ended, Gonsalves thanked Patrick Curry, a past Chamber president who, nearly 20 years ago, envisioned a gazebo at Veteran’s Memorial Park.
