Warriors win, celebrate at Homecoming

Posted

Spirits were high last Saturday as cheerleaders marched up Wantagh Avenue, chanting “Black! Gold!” and “Go Warriors!” Hundreds of residents came out for Wantagh High School’s annual Homecoming celebration, which included the annual parade and football game.

Festivities began with the parade, which featured the marching band, cheerleaders, the Homecoming court, floats, administrators and Wantagh Board of Education. The grand marshal was Michael Cucci, who was recognized for his 18 years of service to the board.

The Homecoming game was a district celebration, with students from elementary, middle and high school packing the stands for the game against the Bethpage High School Eagles. Although the Warriors gave up the first touchdown, district leaders said, they displayed the determination that led the team to a Long Island championship last year.

Wantagh went into halftime with a three-point lead and turned that into a 24-14 win.

The halftime show opened with the announcement of the Homecoming king and queen: Logan von Runnen and Kyleigh Watson. Rounding out the court were Mike Henig, Nick Cerasi, Katie Gifford and Savannah Palas.

The junior class won the float contest with its Food Network-themed creation. Following a choreographed routine by the cheerleaders, the marching band and dance team came together, performing the Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine hit, “Conga.”

The Wantagh Warriors are back in action on Saturday against Floral Park.
