Body found after house fire on Sunset Avenue in Island Park

A huge house fire at 204 Sunset Avenue in Island Park resulted in the death of resident George Urich, 83, was the sole victim of a raging fire that tore through his Island Park home on Sunset Avenue early morning on March 17.

Several fire departments were on the scene after the initial call around 2 a.m. Monday. The fire spread to the house next door, but the fire was put out within 90 minutes.

More than 100 firefighters worked to extinguish the fire. They came from Island Park, Point Lookout, Oceanside, Freeport, Baldwin, East Rockaway, Lynbrook, Franklin Square, and Rockville Centre.

The body of the homes resident was found after being missing for several hours as firefighters combed the rubble.

Fire officials initially believed a husband and wife were in the house at the time of the fire, but later learned the wife was living in an assisted living facility. The man has not been identified but the family has been notified. The fire is under investigation but officals said it did not appear suspicious.
