Wellington C. Mepham High School’s homecoming week brought together students, alumni and the community in a celebration of school spirit — and fittingly ended with the Pirates edging MacArthur 24-21 in a dramatic finish on Sept. 20.
The Pirates improved to 2-0 behind a balanced attack, clutch defensive play, and a late field goal by Ryan Bayer with 1:48 left to spark the victory. Running back Lenny Achan powered the offense with 124 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries, while quarterback Adam Erlichman went 7-for-10 for 105 yards and a scoring toss. Tyler Gaskin sealed the win with a late interception.
Defensively, James Quilty recorded 14 tackles and Shaki Davidov added six.
The game was the centerpiece of a spirited week on campus that united students, staff, alumni, and the Bellmore community. Traditions such as hallway decorating, a high-energy pep rally, and the Pirate Festival returned in full force, giving students opportunities to showcase their school pride.
During halftime, Mepham’s cheerleaders and kickline squad delivered dynamic routines, while student leaders energized the crowd as the Pirate mascot and game emcees. The pep band, directed by Anthony Brandofino, provided a steady soundtrack to the afternoon.
Ceremonies also honored community service and school pride. Members of the local Vietnam War Veterans Association presented the colors before kickoff, and several distinguished alumni were enshrined in the school’s inaugural Hall of Fame, recognizing their contributions to Mepham’s legacy.
The week concluded with a packed homecoming dance, where seniors Halen Songco and Ryan Lechleitner were crowned queen and king.
