Wantagh superintendent welcomes class of 2033

Sept. 8 marked the first day Wantagh School District students returned to their classrooms since mid-March due to the effects of the coronavirus.

The students stepped off their yellow school buses and out of their family vehicles and were welcomed by a masked brigade of Wantagh Board of Education trustees, administration and faculty members. The greetings marked the commencement of the 2020-21 school year.

Unlike the first day of years past, once the excitement of returning subsided, students were rushed to the temperature checking station, garbed in their masks.

Schools Superintendent John C. McNamara said that the start of this school year went well and that students and faculty were prepared to meet the challenges of the year ahead. “Even though the return to the classroom is different, the administration, faculty and staff have worked diligently over the past several months to provide a safe environment and balance the social and emotional needs of our students with the academic programs we will offer during the course of the school year,” McNamara said. “I am confident that 2020-21 will be a productive and positive school year for all Wantagh students.”
