An Elmont man was in police custody and receiving treatment at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow when he allegedly assaulted the officers escorting him. He was arrested at the scene, police said.

Carre Handhel, 32, had been held at the Nassau County Correctional Center and pending arraignment for charges of assault and false report. According to police, around 10 a.m. on May 3, he was escorted by police to the hospital when he grew “irate” and threatened to physically assault them.

Handhel spit on the officers and said he had AIDS before becoming “physically combative” and “violently” fighting with the officers, officials said. While the struggle ensued, officers received minor injuries and one was lacerated on both forearms. All officers received treatment at the hospital and were released.

The defendant is being charged with second and third degree assault, third degree menacing, disorderly conduct and a second-degree charge of obstructing governmental administration. Police did not detail the defendant’s physical condition, but said that he would be arraigned when medically practical.
