Victor Deliso and Faye Furshpan retired in June after two-decades of working as guidance counselors at East Meadow High School.

Deliso was hired in 1999 after accruing a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and three Master’s degrees in Marketing, Community Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling from Long Island University.

Some of Deliso’s proudest achievements in his 20-year tenure include revamping the Advanced Placement exams and hearing about the success of his former students.

“I will miss my students, many of the great families and the incredibly professional group of people he had the pleasure of working with,” he said. Deliso moved to Palm Springs, California in July, where he will continue his work outside EMHS: running Motivation Wellness groups in Weight Watchers. He also plans to counsel adults by launching a private therapy practice.

Furshpan grew up in Buffalo and graduated from Stonybrook University in 1978 with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology.

During a college internship at a laboratory school, she developed a passion for working with students on social and emotional issues in a school setting. “I decided then to pursue school counseling as a perfect way to merge psychology and education,” she said.

After 21 years at East Meadow High School, she said, “I will miss the strong sense of community and fellowship, along with the dynamic nature of working at East Meadow High School.”

Furshpan said that she is looking forward to spending a lot of quality time with her grandchildren, traveling and “having the simple pleasure of sleeping past 5 am.”

Succeeding Deliso and Furshpan this fall will be Steven Pereira and Carly Salzman.

Pereira earned his Bachelor’s degree sports management from SUNY Cortland in 2006 and earned his Master of Science in education with a degree in school counseling from Queens College in 2012.

“I am looking forward to getting to know my students, parents and staff at East Meadow High School and I can’t wait to work with them both inside and outside the school environment,” he said.

Pereira wants to build a strong and trusting relationship with his students and create a safe and respectful environment that allows his students to reach their utmost potential. He said, “I want my students to know that my door is always open to them and they can come to me for assistance or even just to say hello.”

Salzman is an East Meadow High School alumnus who earned her Bachelor’s degree in Adolescent Education and Mathematics from SUNY Oneonta in May 2017 and will earn her Master’s degree in School Counseling at Queens College this May.

She said that she was inspired to make a difference in students’ lives by Diane Greco, her guidance counselor at EMHS who still works at the school. “She made such a wonderful impact on me in high school always helping me and supporting me in any way that she could and I knew that I wanted to be that person for students of my own,” she said. “Now I will be working alongside my inspiration.”

Salzman is also the Junior Varsity cheerleading coach at East Meadow High School and hopes to become a class advisor for Battle of the Classes.

Salzman said she that will support her students in any way that she can, so they can have the most enjoyable high school experience possible. “I want my students to know that I am there for them for whatever they need,” she said.
