There are two more confirmed Covid-19 cases in the Lawrence School District as of Oct. 2, according to brief letter that was sent out by Superintendent Dr. Ann Pedersen.

One case is a pre-K student who was in the building on Sept., 29, she said. "As determined by the (Nassau County) Department of Health, the affected pre-K class will be on quarantine," Pedersen wrote. The other is a quarantined staff member at the Lawrence Primary School at the Number Two School.  "This individual is determined to have no close contacts to the school community as they tested negative after their last day in the building," Pre-K in Lawrence is in  the Number Four School and classes do not move about the building.

"Primary school is evidence that contact tracing and quarantne works," Pedersen told the Herald.  "The person was tested negative after leaving the building Wednesday. They tested positive today (Oct. 2)."

Earlier this week there were  two confirmed cases of Covid-19 at the Lawrence Primary School at the Number Two School in Inwood reported on Sept. 29. On Oct. 1, the building was closed and there was remote instruction, A day later, full in-person instruction returned.

"The DOH completed contact tracing and discovered no additional information," Pedersen stated in a text, adding, "A standing ovation to the primary school teachers and staff for the fantastic switch to an educationally productive full remote day."

The Nassau County Department of Health conducts the contract tracing in an effort to contain  exposure. In the initial two Lawrence cases one was determined to have no known exposure to the school and the other was limited to one class, Pedersen said.

In a letter sent to parents on Sept. 29, she stated that one staff member was last on the school campus on Sept. 25, and tested four days later. The staff members names will remain confidential, she added.

"The staff member maintained proper social distancing protocols while in the school building," Pedersen stated in the letter. "The building is cleaned and disinfected nightly in accordance with our procedures." No other district buildings are affected, she added.

Covid-19 symptoms are related to the  rear seasonal flu and include fever, coughing and shortness of breath. Additional symptoms could be a runny nose, sore throat, nausea, lethargy, lack of appetite, vomiting and diarrhea.

"If your child is exhibiting any symptoms such as those listed above, please contact your child’s medical provider to report their illness prior to seeking care at a clinic, physician’s office, or hospital," Pedersen stated.  "We are closely monitoring this situation and will provide you with additional information should it become necessary."

Pedersen added that if parents have any questions to contact her at (516) 295-7030.
