Target store in Elmont to remain open

The Elmont Target store may be boarded up, but it is not stopping operations as protests against police brutality continue to rage across the country.

The department store was on an original list of 175 franchises across the country that would temporarily close in response to protestors in Minneapolis stealing items from one of its stores. However, as of press time, the list was only six, including the one on Lake Street in Minneapolis, near where George Floyd was killed by police.

“We are a community in pain,” Target Chief Executive Brian Cornell said in a statement posted on the company’s website. “That pain is not unique to the Twin Cities — it extends across America. The murder of George Floyd has unleashed the pent-up pain of years, as have the killings of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor. We say their names and hold a too-long list of others in our hearts.

“As a Target team, we’ve huddled, we’ve consoled, we’ve witnessed horrific scenes similar to what’s playing out now, and wept that not enough is changing. And as a team, we’ve vowed to face pain with purpose.”
