Central H.S. Key Club raises funds for charity

Posted

The Central High School Key Club held its annual fundraiser on Feb. 13, recruiting the help of fellow clubs to raise money for the Only Love Foundation, an education non-profit.

In addition to a $1 entrance fee to the school gym, the cosmetology, National Honors Society and culinary clubs sold items such as cake pops, henna tattoos and manicures, with the proceeds also going to Only Love. Other clubs set up tables in the gym with activities to draw their fellow classmates to donate.

While the Key Club holds weekly fundraisers to keep its operations running, Thursday’s fundraiser was its largest for the year, according to President Kaitlyn Gavin.

She said the Only Love Foundation, which helps build schools in Kenya and is centrally located in Valley Stream, is well known in Central so it made sense that it would be the recipient for this year’s fundraiser. Additionally, its founder, Craig Taylor is a 2004 Central High School graduate and has visited to speak there about his organization’s work on a number of occasions.

“We love him,” Gavin said of the local humanitarian.
