Lynbrook Dance Workshop hosts successful open audition for film

The Lynbrook Dance Workshop hosted an open audition for an upcoming film project on Oct. 6.

Dozens of dancers from across Long Island came to the studio, on Merrick Road, in the hope of making a splash at the audition. They ranged in age from 8- to 30-years-old. The studio was founded by MaryAnn Grasso in Valley Stream in 1979. About 16 years ago, MaryAnn and her daughter, Nanci, moved the studio to a larger location in Lynbrook.

“It was a great decision because we just love the community of Lynbrook,” Nanci told the Herald last year.

Last month’s open audition was hosted by Michael and Janeen Damian, who served as director and producer, respectively, for “High Strung Free Dance.” The romance and musical film, which was released on Oct. 11, follows a young choreographer who casts a contemporary dancer and an innovative pianist in New York’s most anticipated new Broadway show. Things take a turn when the pianist falls for the choreographer.

Michael and Janeen Damian hosted open auditions for a future film at the workshop on Oct. 6 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Juliet Doherty, who stars in “High Strung Free Dance,” offered a lesson to attendees before the audition began.

The Grassos have fostered a family atmosphere in the dance business and have developed life-long friendships at the business, and many generations of dancers have come through over the more than four decades they have been in business. The studio has offered many types of dance classes and has hosted recitals to showcase the talents of its musical and dance performers.
