Lynbrook veteran honored on his 100th birthday

Members of Lynbrook American Legion Post 335 recently presented a Certificate of Honor to retired U.S. Marine Col. James S. Knap for his 100th birthday on New Year’s Day at the Bristal Assisted Living Facility on Freer Street.

Knap served in World War II and was present in Tokyo Bay when the Japanese surrendered. He spent 45 years on active duty and in the reserves. He is the former commander of the Marine Barracks on Stewart Avenue in Garden City, and has lived at the Bristal for nearly seven years.

Mayor Alan Beach, Deputy Mayor Michael Hawxhurst, Trustee Ann Marie Reardon and Police Chief Brian Paladino also came by to wish Knap a happy birthday and present him with a citation.
