Three senior citizens were injured and eight were displaced after a fire at the Nathan Hale Senior Village on Feb. 27.

The blaze was accidentally ignited when a resident at the facility, at 30 Doxsey Place, attempted to light incense.

Injuries to residents were not severe, but they were rushed to a local hospital, where they were discharged later that day. The eight seniors whose units were destroyed in the fire were offered accommodations at the Holiday Inn Express on Sunrise Highway, but many decided to stay with family members instead.

Only one unit was severely destroyed, according to Deputy Mayor Hilary Becker, who serves as the president for Nathan Hale and held a news conference about the fire on Feb. 28.

“Most of the residents should be able to come back into the building in the next few days,” Becker said.
