In an effort to engage students in team building activities, Hewlett Elementary School held it’s CARE Camp event on May 21.

CARE stands for courage, active citizenship, respect of differences, and empathy. The day included events that were held inside and outside of the classroom. The events consisted of group physical education activities that aimed to help students build communication, teamwork skills and peer relationships. There were also meditation workshops that took place inside the school. That consisted of a mindfulness meditation workshop that was hosted by HES third grade teacher Erika Polsinelli.

HES principal Dr. Colleen O’Hara said that the school’s shared decision making committee organized CARE Camp. Members of the committee include parents, students, teachers, and building administration.

“CARE Camp is a day dedicated to the social emotional learning of our students,” O’Hara said. “Developing social emotional skills has a positive impact on academic performance, overall wellbeing, self management, self-esteem and relationships with family and peers.”
