Two men were arrested and one was charged with possession of a weapon after Nassau County’s  Bureau of Special Operations made a traffic stop in Inwood at 3:15 p.m. on July 14, police said.

The detectives saw a gray 2001 Nissan heading south on Sheridan Boulevard with what police said was a temporary license plate and failing to remain in the traffic lane. After stopping the car and through the subsequent investigation a handgun was recovered.

Then, Jamel Thompson, 41, of  Beach Channel Drive in Far Rockaway, identified by police as the passenger, fled the scene on foot. Thompson, police said, “refused to comply with verbal commands and resisted arrest,” as officers tried to arrest Thompson. He was then handcuffed.

Thompson is charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm, second-degree assault, and resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration.  One police officer twisted his knee during the arrest and was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Karyim Brown, 37, of 2nd Avenue  in Astoria, identified as the driver, remained at the scene during the investigation. He was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument.

Thompson's next court date is July 20. He did not post bail listed at $25,000 nor the $12,500 cash band. Hauppauge-based attorney Danielle Marie  Papa is representing him.

Brown was released on his own recognizance. His next court date is July 26. He is being repesented by the Legal Aid Society of Nassau County.
