Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department members recognized for heroic actions

Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department members Meyer Adler and Shoshana Weiner were honored for their actions last December as they, along with Robert Player, realized that fellow LCFD member Capt. Jack Kelly had gone into cardiac arrest at the scene of a fire.

Using a new defibrillator that was purchased with a portion of the $255,000 state grant obtained by State Sen. Todd Kaminsky (D-Long Beach), the trio helped to save Kelly’s life. The trio began cardiac pulmonary resuscitation and worked in the words of Cedarhurst village officials “tirelessly to save his life.”

Kaminsky presented Liberty medals to Adler, an emergency medical technician, and Weiner, a paramedic, at an informal ceremony at the firehouse on July 21.

The Liberty Medal is awarded as a commendation for exceptional, heroic or humanitarian acts on behalf of New Yorkers. Player, a certified first responder, did not attend. A new ambulance, also bought with the grant money, was dedicated.
